The Baptism Jesus Received is the Antitype of Salvation [Bible Study 6]

The following is a summary of Book 1, “Have You Truly Been Born Again of Water and the Spirit?” from the sermon series by Pastor Paul C. Jong, servant of God of The New Life Mission.

There is also an antitype which now saves us — baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Those who are saved are those who believe in both Jesus’ baptism and blood.

1 Peter 3:21

“There is also an antitype which now saves us — baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

The Bible testifies that the baptism Jesus was to be baptized by John the Baptist is the antitype of salvation. Thus, Matthew 3:13–15 states:

‘Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.’

Jesus came to the Jordan River at age 30 to be baptized by John the Baptist, who was the last High Priest of Aaron’s lineage and humanity’s representative. And He said to John the Baptist, Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”

This means, “John the Baptist, as humanity’s representative, you must give me baptism to transfer all the sins of this world to me. By doing so, we must make all people righteous by eliminating all their sins.”

However, some theologians say Jesus was baptized because He was humble or wanted to be like others. Many people think Jesus’ baptism is merely a doctrine of the Christian community. But this is not true.

The Reason Jesus Was Baptized

As the Bible states, just as in the Old Testament when the High Priest laid hands on the sacrifice to transfer all the sins of the Israelites to it, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the last High Priest from Aaron’s lineage, and through this all the sins of the world were transferred to Him.

As a result, He eliminated the sins of all who believe in this truth of baptism, the antitype of salvation.

Then He went to the cross and received judgment in our place for those sins, making all believers righteous and sinless. This is why Jesus was baptized for us.

What kind of beings were we fundamentally? We were sinners destined for hell.

Before we believed in Jesus’ baptism, blood of the cross, and the Spirit — when we believed only in the blood of the cross and the Spirit while ignoring Jesus’ baptism — weren’t we sinners who continuously had sin in our hearts?

Now we who are saved from all sins by believing in Jesus’ water (baptism), blood, and Spirit are recipients of God’s special love. We are God’s children.

Why did God make us be born again as righteous people, as His children?

Is it because we were beautiful in His sight? Is it because we were so valuable? Or is it because we served so well with patience?

It is because God created us to make us His people out of His love, to live with Him in heaven.

Our salvation is a miracle of miracles, and our ability to call God our Father and Lord is not because we did something well but is God’s unconditional love and blessing.

Without salvation through water (baptism), blood, and Spirit given by God’s love, we would be born and die meaninglessly and all go to hell.

We repeatedly thank God for His blessing and love that saved us from all sins, made us His children, and made us worthy in His sight.

For those who believe in Jesus but have sin in their hearts and are poor in spirit and mourning, I strongly recommend Book 1 of Pastor Paul C. Jong’s sermon series, “Have You Truly Been Born Again of Water and the Spirit?”
