"For many are called, but few are chosen" - Matthew 3 [Bible Study 5]

Today’s blog post is a summary of the sermon content by Pastor Paul C. Jong, servant of God of The New Life Mission, who authored “Have You Truly Been Born Again of Water and Spirit?” and numerous other sermon books.

Matthew 22:1–14

And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said: “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.” ’ But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Heaven is for those who are married to Jesus Christ.

We are marrying the Son of God the King, and those who wear the wedding garment — those who have no sin in their hearts and are as white as snow through faith in the gospel of water, blood, and the Spirit fulfilled by Jesus — enter the wedding feast, which is heaven.

As stated in verse 14, “For many are called, but few are chosen,” God has invited everyone, but He said few are chosen.

In this world, there are countless churches and Christians, but among these many who claim to believe in Jesus, few are chosen by Jesus.

As mentioned in this passage, many were invited to the wedding feast, but because they were captivated by the world, or because they followed Jesus not with the wedding garment He desired but with their own wealth, service, and will, they were killed and cast out.

Then whom did God choose to save?

God chose those who seek mercy before Him, in other words, those who say, “Lord, I am truly a wretched person. I am so weak, insufficient, and evil that I cannot keep any of God’s words — I truly deserve to go to hell. Although I am such a person, please have mercy on me and save me. If You don’t save me, I will go to hell. Lord, please have mercy on me and save me.”

God chooses and saves those who are poor in spirit, who mourn as sinners because they cannot live according to God’s word, and lets them enter the wedding feast, which is heaven.

Matthew 9:13

“For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Only such people believe in the salvation fulfilled by the Lord.

Jesus, who is God, came to this earth in the flesh for mourning sinners and was baptized by John the Baptist, whom God the Father appointed as humanity’s representative, to take on all the sins of this world.

Thus, Jesus took all the sins of the world upon Himself through His baptism, and to be judged for those sins, He was judged on the cross, said “It is finished,” and paid the full price for sin. And He rose again after three days and gave eternal new life to us who believe.

This is the gospel of salvation: water (Jesus eliminating all sins of this world by being baptized), blood (Jesus being judged and atoning for all our sins), and the Spirit (Jesus who is God coming in the flesh).

Those who have no sin by believing in this gospel of water, blood, and the Spirit are those who wear the wedding garment God desires.

In this passage, it says those not wearing the wedding garment will be bound and cast into outer darkness.

Our human will, goodness, service, worship, and effort are not the wedding garment God desires.

Matthew 9:13

“But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’”

To enter the wedding feast, we must know that we are sinners deserving hell and believe in the gospel of water (baptism), blood, and the Spirit through which Jesus saved us from all the sins of the world — this is how we wear the wedding garment the Lord desires and go to heaven.
