You must be qualified to believe in God [Christian Sermons 10]

The following is a summary of a sermon by Pastor Paul C. Jong, a servant of God from The New Life Mission. If you visit the New Life Mission website, you can download many of Pastor Paul C. Jong's evangelistic books for free in both e-book and audiobook formats.

We must first be qualified to believe in God, and that qualification is to know that man is a seed of evil and to acknowledge that we are destined to go to hell.

Genesis 6:5-8

“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”

God says that all the thoughts and all the plans of man are always evil.

But what about man? Because man does not know that his thoughts are always evil, he holds onto the correctness of his thoughts, stubbornly following them.  As a result, according to God's law that the wages of sin is death, he will surely go to hell in destruction.

Who among you is qualified to believe in God? Who can be saved from their own sins?

We must first be qualified to believe in God, and that qualification is to know that man is a seed of evil and to acknowledge that we are destined to go to hell.

We must first acknowledge that we ourselves are those who have no choice but to go to hell before God.

We must first acknowledge that we ourselves are sinners destined for hell in order to accept and believe in God.

God created man and said in Genesis 2:16-17, "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, 'Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'"

However, Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan and ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Therefore, Adam became a sinner who disobeyed God's word and was separated from God.

Therefore, all people of humanity, as descendants of Adam, are born with the sin inherited from Adam and, as God said, 'You shall surely die (Genesis 2:17)' According to God's law that 'the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)', they have no choice but to go to hell.

Therefore, whether we commit sins or not, whether we live righteously or wickedly, whether we serve much or not, all people are born with sin and are destined to go to hell.

A person is born with 12 sins from birth.

In Mark 7:21-23, it says, "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man."

According to this word, a person is born with 12 evil thoughts, follows those evil thoughts in life, and eventually goes to hell. Therefore, in order to believe in God, we must first realize that we are a seed destined for hell.

By acknowledging that you are destined for hell, you must cry out to the Lord, "Have mercy on me, Lord! Show me compassion and save me. If You do not save me, I will surely go to hell. So please, have mercy on me and save me!"

Only when you first acknowledge that you are destined for hell can you receive the Lord's mercy, be saved from sin, and become a sinless, holy child of God who can walk with Him.

"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. (Luke 5:31)"

Only those who acknowledge that they are surely destined for hell need the Lord and can believe in the gospel of salvation that the Lord has given.

Those who say, "I only have small sins. Please forgive just these sins. Am I not still a decent person?" do not need the Lord’s salvation. How can sins be removed when one says to have no sin? Only those who acknowledge that they are full of sin and are destined for hell can realize their need for the Lord, and only those who believe in the salvation from sin that the Lord has accomplished are qualified to receive salvation.

One can believe in the gospel without acknowledging that they are a sinner bound for hell. However, even if such a person believes in the salvation from sin that Jesus has accomplished, this salvation remains merely theoretical rather than real, and thus sin remains in their heart.

Those who believe in the gospel of Jesus' salvation but are not qualified to believe in God, in other words, those who do not realize that they are sinners bound for hell, will be cast out into the outer darkness in the end, where they will weep and gnash their teeth.

Matthew 16:24-25

"Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.'"

Since one's thoughts are always evil, they must deny their own thoughts. And since ‘the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)’, they must acknowledge that they are surely a sinner bound for hell and seek the Lord.

If we acknowledge that we are sinners bound for hell, Jesus will have mercy on us and save us from sin through the gospel of water(baptism), blood, and the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 3:15, it says, "But Jesus answered and said to him, 'Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.' Then he allowed Him."

Jesus Christ, who came as the Lamb of God, the atoning sacrifice, was baptized by John the Baptist.

Why did Jesus receive baptism from John the Baptist?

Jesus received baptism from John the Baptist, who was testified by Him as "the greatest among those born of women", meaning he was the representative of all humanity and the last High Priest as a descendant of Aaron. Just like the laying on of hands in the Old Testament sacrifices, Jesus received baptism from John, transferring all the sins of the world onto Himself, thereby taking away the sins of the world.

And after being baptized and taking upon Himself all the sins of the world, Jesus went to the Cross where He shed His blood and received judgment for all the sins of the world.

In this way, Jesus accomplished God's love by taking away all the sins of the world and saving everyone from sin.

Only those who acknowledge that they are surely bound for hell unless Jesus saves them can truly hold on to Jesus' baptism, blood, and resurrection through which He took away all sins, and through that faith, they can become children of the holy God.
