“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." [Bible Study 7]
The following is a summary of content excerpted from the sermon book by Pastor Paul C. Jong, featured on The New Life Mission website, titled ‘Have You Truly Been Born Again of Water and the Spirit?’
<John 8:1–11>
‘But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”’
In John 8, we see a woman caught in adultery. We witness how she was saved by Jesus.
Everyone commits adultery.
All people on earth commit spiritual and physical adultery.
However, this woman caught in adultery in the Bible was saved by Jesus.
Yet, the hypocritical Pharisees, the religious leaders, tried to mock and judge her as if they had never committed adultery, as if they were pure. They did not hear the words of salvation from Jesus, “Neither do I condemn you,” and they left, scattering in all directions.
But this woman, who was revealed as a sinner both before the Law and before people, acknowledged that she deserved to be put to death and to go to hell. She believed that Jesus was the Savior who would save her from all her sins. Therefore, she received the words of salvation from Jesus, “Neither do I condemn you.”
So why did Jesus say to this adulterous woman, “Neither do I condemn you”?
The reason is that when Jesus, who came as the Lamb of God, received baptism from John the Baptist (the representative of humanity and the last high priest), all the sins of the world were transferred onto Jesus’s head, and at that moment, all the sins of this adulterous woman were also transferred to Jesus. Therefore, Jesus could not condemn this woman who believed in Him as her Savior and in His baptism. Therefore, Jesus could not condemn this woman who believed in Him as her Savior and in His baptism.
Jesus not only bore the sins of this woman but also took upon Himself all the sins of the world through His baptism and was crucified and died as a judgment for those sins.
This woman was saved because she believed that all her sins of adultery were transferred to Jesus when He came as the Lamb of God and received the same baptism as the laying on of hands in the Old Testament.
Those who think they have no sin cannot be saved.
How can one be saved from sin if there is no sin to be removed? Why would a doctor be needed if one is not sick?
Only those who acknowledge that they are sinners destined for hell need the gospel of water (receiving baptism and bearing all the sins of the world), blood (being judged), and the Spirit (Jesus being God), and only such people can believe in this gospel of salvation.
When Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first,” the Pharisees and religious leaders, who were pretending not to be sinners, dropped their stones and left.
Everyone sins. Since ‘the wages of sin is death,’ everyone is destined to be stoned to death and go to hell.
However, Jesus did not say to stone her but said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
Entering heaven is not because one did not sin in this world, but because one acknowledges being a sinner destined for hell and believes in the salvation of water (baptism) and the Spirit through which Jesus saved us from all sins once and for all. This is the ‘Law of faith’ (Romans 3:27).
You too must become one who receives the words, “Neither do I condemn you.”
How?
By believing in the gospel of water and the Spirit: that Jesus, sent by God the Father as the sacrificial Lamb, received baptism from John the Baptist, the representative of humanity, to take away all our sins by accepting the transfer of all sins onto Himself, and that He bore all the sins of the world and was judged by shedding His blood on the cross, and that He rose from the dead after three days to become our Savior.
