Today's scripture reading is from Revelation 22:7-17.
‘“Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. Then he said to me, “See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” And he said to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand. He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.” “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.’
Before this passage, the text spoke of the seven plagues that would befall humanity. In this passage, we see that the Lord says He is coming quickly and commands not to seal up the words of prophecy.
It also mentions that the unjust and the impure should be left as they are. It is fitting that the drunkards, the adulterers, the murderers, the idolaters, and those who love lying should remain outside the city. Such people, according to the righteous law of God that 'the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)', rightfully belong outside of Heaven, in Hell. Those who refuse to believe are to be left alone, as this allows the Lord to judge righteously.
Outside the city gates are the dogs. A dog is one who eats its own vomit and returns to its vomit again. In the Word of God, a 'dog' refers to those who believe in God yet repeatedly sin, pray for forgiveness, sin again, and continue to plead under the weight of sin.
Those who believe in Jesus but continue to sin, and think that they are saved by asking for forgiveness and repenting, as well as those who try to cleanse themselves through their own deeds, are said to be outside the city gates.
Moreover, the Bible states in 1 John chapter 1, verse 8, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." And in verse 10, "If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."
Those who claim to be without sin, in other words, those who do not acknowledge that they are sinners who deserve to go to hell, are said to be outside.
One must acknowledge their sin for the Lord to meet them and save them from their sins through the gospel.
Such people who don't acknowledge their sins are not qualified to meet the Lord.
A liar is someone who, namely, professes to believe in Jesus but harbors sin in their heart, and who claims to believe in Jesus yet continues to sin and condemns themselves.
Those who believe according to their own understanding or the doctrines of their religion, and think they will go to heaven despite having sin in their hearts; those who claim to be saved but do not believe in Jesus’ work of salvation and always remain under sin—these people are liars, outside the kingdom of God, unable to enter heaven.
Titus 3:10-11 speaks about such individuals, saying, "Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned."
According to God's law that 'the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)’, anyone with sin must surely go to hell. Therefore, humanity, born with twelve sins, is fully qualified for and destined to go to hell.
Therefore, in order to enter the holy city, to enter heaven, we need our Savior Jesus Christ, who has already eliminated all our sins—past, present, and future—the sins we commit from birth until death.
Therefore, God says in 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Jesus Christ came to this earth as the Lamb of God, a propitiation, and at the age of 30, He was baptized by John the Baptist, who was the representative of mankind and the High Priest, taking upon Himself all the sins of this world and thus eliminating them. And to be judged for all the sins of this world that He took upon Himself, He died bleeding on the cross, thereby saving us from all the sins of this world.
This means that the baptism and the blood of the cross performed by Jesus Christ have cleansed us from all unrighteousness.
Therefore, those who believe in this truth of salvation are reborn as holy children of God—white as snow, having no sin in their hearts and with the Holy Spirit dwelling within them.
However, even though we are born again, as we live in this world, our flesh cannot help but commit sin.
Therefore, when we 'confess our sins' before God, in other words, 'Lord, I have done what I should not have done. My flesh is destined for hell, but You loved me and on Your part, took all my sins through baptism, and paid the full price for those sins on the cross - this I believe. Therefore, I believe that You have cleansed me from all unrighteousness - past, present, and until I die - and through this faith, there is no sin in my heart. Thank you.' This is how we resolve the problem of sin through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
So, just as the Scripture says, ‘Blessed are those who do His commandments (Revelation 22:14)’, those who have received the forgiveness of sins by believing in Jesus' baptism and His blood on the cross confess before the Lord all the sins they commit knowingly and unknowingly due to the weakness of the flesh.
And by continually reflecting on and believing in His baptism and blood, through which Jesus, who is God, has already removed all sins, they come to live a blessed life as those who have no sin in their hearts.
‘And the Spirit and the bride say (Revelation 22:17)’—this refers to Jesus and us, the righteous, who have been born again from sinners to the righteous by faith.
Through the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us, the righteous proclaim this blessed gospel of salvation to all people.
Everyone, what kind of time are we living in now?
Are we not living in the last days?
The Lord spoke about the last days, saying, ‘He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still (Revelation 22:11)’ because He will judge righteously according to this.
Everyone, recognize what time this world is in now, and by believing in the work of Jesus Christ—who has once and for all cleansed us from our sins forever—through His Holy Spirit, baptism, and blood, may you become those who overcome in these last days.
