The Meaning of the Name Jesus Christ - 'He will save His people from their sins' (Matthew 1:21) [Christmas Sermon 2024]

What is the true meaning of Christmas?

December 25th is Christmas, when Jesus was born to save all sinners in this world.

Romans 10:13

“For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

This verse means that whoever believes and relies on that name will be saved.

Then, what is the exact meaning that the name ‘Jesus Christ’ signifies?

First, the name ‘Jesus’ means “…He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21).

And ‘Christ’ means the ‘Anointed One’.

There are three official roles of one who is anointed by God:

  1. Role of King
  2. Role of Prophet
  3. Role of High Priest of Heaven

Jesus Christ fulfilled these three roles and eliminated all sins of all sinners.

Jesus Christ, who came as baby Jesus, came to this earth as the Son of God the Father to be the Savior of all sinners. And as King of kings, as Prophet, and as High Priest of Heaven, He eliminated all sinners’ sins, thus saving all who believe from all sins.

Jesus came to earth as the Anointed One and saved us from all sins through water, blood, and the Spirit.

Water refers to John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River. Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist was the baptism of salvation that bore all the sins of the world.

1 Peter 3:21

“There is also an antitype which now saves us — baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

'Blood' represents that He came in human flesh to bear all the sins of the world, was baptized, and paid the wages of sin by shedding His blood on the cross.

The ‘Spirit’ means that Jesus, who is God, came to this earth in flesh as Jesus Christ in spirit to become the Savior of sinners.

Jesus Christ is the One who came in all these forms and fulfilled everything.

We must believe that Jesus gave us atonement and salvation as our King, Prophet, and Priest. That is why we call Him ‘Jesus Christ.’ He was the High Priest of Heaven who saved us from all sins of the world through baptism and blood.

1 John 5:5–6

“Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood — Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.”

He came to this earth as baby Jesus to save us sinners who were bound for hell with 12 sins, and He blotted out all the sins of the world through water, blood, and the Spirit.

Thus, on this Christmas, we truly worship and praise the Lord who made those who believe and rely on His name into sinless holy children of God.

I pray that God’s blessing of salvation comes to everyone in this world.
